For a lot of us, the work week is now a mix of kitchen counter, couch, coffee shop, and the occasional day at the office. Some days start with a camera-on meeting at 9 and end with school pickup, an errand run, or drinks with a friend. And every morning, the question is the same: What am I going to wear?

The goal is clothes that feel as good as sweatpants and look pulled together enough for a video call, the school pickup line, and whatever comes after. After years of working from home (and plenty of trial and error), I’ve landed on a short list of pieces that do all of it.

Below you’ll find my rules for work-from-home clothes, a 12-piece capsule, and five outfits for the kinds of days you actually have.

The 12-piece work-from-home capsule

Shop your own closet first, then fill in what’s missing. Each slot lists what to look for. For each product block, fill in the template below.

  1. The layering tank. A soft, snug first layer you can wear alone under a jacket or tucked under a cardigan. Look for: stretch, and no shrinking or pilling after repeat washes.
  2. The boxy tee. A substantial cotton tee that holds its shape on camera and looks intentional under a jacket.
  3. The camera-ready button-up. A solid color with an open neckline that frames the face, and sleeves that roll. Look for: wrinkle resistance.
  4. The soft knit or sweatshirt. For deep-work days: oversized but not sloppy, soft enough to forget you’re wearing it.
  5. The cardigan jacket (or relaxed blazer). The piece that makes everything underneath look intentional.
  6. The wrap cardigan. A long, blanket-soft layer for the couch and the walk to pickup.
  7. The easy trouser. Trouser shape, elastic or drawstring comfort. The pant that replaces jeans.
  8. The soft pant. A jogger or knit wide-leg you can wear out of the house without apology.
  9. The leggings. Opaque and supportive, not see-through when you bend.
  10. The easy dress. One zero-decision dress that still looks pulled together.
  11. The sneaker. Clean, comfortable, and just as good for errands as for evenings.
  12. The slipper or house flat. Warm feet, no “big-girl shoes.”

Five outfits for five kinds of days

The video-call day

Camera-ready button-up (3), easy trouser (7), slippers (12). Solid color from the waist up, comfort from the waist down. Keep the cardigan jacket (5) on the chair for a surprise second meeting.

The deep-work day

Soft knit (4), soft pant (8), slippers (12). Nothing pinches, nothing needs adjusting.

The school-pickup and errands day

Boxy tee (2), cardigan jacket (5), easy trouser (7) or leggings (9), sneakers (11). For more, see our school drop-off outfit formulas.

The hybrid-office day

Button-up (3), easy trouser (7), cardigan jacket (5), sneakers or flats. Nothing here reads as “home clothes,” so it works at your desk or at the office.

The evening-plans day

Easy dress (10), button-up worn open over it (3), sneakers (11). Add jewelry and you’re out the door.
