War enters Day 22
It's now Day 22 in the Israel-US-Iran war that erupted with surprise joint Israeli and American attacks against the Islamic Republic. Since then, Tehran has been launching attacks it calls retaliatory against Gulf states.
On March 20, US President Donald Trump said the US is getting close to meeting its objectives in the conflict, in the clearest sign yet of a possible end to the war.
In the UAE and the wider GCC, air defences continue to intercept drones and missiles launched by Iran.
Stay tuned to Khaleej Times as we bring you the latest updates in the conflict as they unfold.
What happened in the Middle East since February 28?
Take a look at how this conflict unfolded day after day since February 28:
Israel strikes Tehran
The Israeli military said early on Saturday that it is hitting targets in the Iranian capital Tehran.
Kuwait army intercepting threats
Kuwait's army is currently dealing with hostile missiles and drones, saying that sounds heard are due to air defences intercepting the threats.
Considering 'winding down' operations: Trump

Overnight attacks in Saudi Arabia
Throughout the night, air defences in Saudi Arabia intercepted and destroyed 55 drones that targeted its Eastern Region, the Ministry of Defence announced in separate statements.
Iran to let Japanese vessels cross Hormuz
Iran is willing to help Japanese ships sail through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global fuel supplies.
In a telephone interview with Kyodo News on Friday, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denied closing the passageway, insisting instead that countries attacking Iran face restrictions, while others were being offered assistance.
Why is this so important to Japan?
Japan, the world's number-four economy, is the fifth-biggest importer of oil, with 95 per cent of it coming from the Middle East and 70 per cent passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Japan's military options are limited under its postwar pacifist constitution, but 2015 security legislation allows Tokyo to use force overseas if an attack, including on a close security partner, threatens Japan's survival and no other means are available to address it.
30-day waiver of sanctions on buying Iranian oil at sea
The Trump administration waived sanctions on the purchase of Iranian oil at sea for 30 days on March 20 in its latest attempt to ease oil prices.
The waiver will bring some 140 million barrels of oil to global markets and help relieve pressure on energy supply, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said.
The license, posted to the Treasury Department's website after market hours, says Iranian oil can be imported into the United States under the waiver when necessary to complete its sale or delivery.
The US has not meaningfully imported Iranian oil since Washington imposed measures after the 1979 revolution. It was unclear whether any Iranian oil would end up in the country as a result of the waiver.
Cuba, North Korea and Crimea are among regions excluded from the license, which will remain in effect until April 19.
Iran targets US-UK military base, says WSJ
Iran recently fired two ballistic missiles toward the joint US-UK military base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing US officials.
Neither missile hit the target, which is around 2,500 miles (4,000 kilometers) from Iranian territory, but the launch suggests that Tehran has missiles with longer ranges than previously thought, the report said.
One of the missiles failed in flight, and the other was targeted by an interceptor fired from a US warship, though it was not clear if the missile was hit, The Journal reported.
Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands is one of two bases Britain is allowing the United States to use for "defensive" operations in Iran.

Iran responds to US waiver of sanctions on oil purchase
In reponse to the US Treasury Secretary's announcement of waiving sanctions on buying Iranian oil at sea for 30 days, Saman Ghodousi, the spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of oil said on X: "At present, Iran essentially has no crude oil left floating on water or surplus for supply in other international markets."
United Airlines trims flights
United Airlines announced that it was scaling back its flight capacities because of soaring jet fuel costs.
Benchmark crude prices have surged to around $100 a barrel in the past three weeks, and United chief Scott Kirby said "our plans assume oil goes to $175 a barrel and doesn't get back down to $100 a barrel until the end of 2027."
If prices stay at current levels, United's fuel bill would balloon by an extra $11 billion this year, Kirby said in a statement to employees.
In response, the airline will cut flights on routes that are no longer profitable at current fuel prices," Kirby said.

Will the US send ground troops to the Middle East?
Three US officials told recently that 2,500 Marines, along with the amphibious assault ship Boxer and accompanying warships, would deploy to the region, although they did not say what their role would be.
Two officials said there had been no decision on whether to send troops into Iran. Sources had told Reuters that possible targets could include Iran's coast or Kharg Island oil export hub.
Trump said on Thursday he was "not putting troops anywhere," when asked by a reporter about his plans, adding, "If I were, I certainly wouldn't tell you."

EU states urged to lower storage targets
The European Commission has urged EU states to lower natural-gas storage targets and start refilling reserves gradually to curb demand, the Financial Times reported.
This comes after the war disrupted key suppliers and triggered a surge in energy prices.
EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen instructed member states to lower the filling target for their gas storage facilities to 80% of capacity, 10 percentage points below the EU’s official targets, “as early as possible in the filling season to provide certainty and reassurance to market participants”, the newspaper said, citing a letter.

Lebanon's official National News Agency reported strikes on two neighbourhoods in the area, without immediately saying what had been hit or whether there were any casualties.
In southern Lebanon, the NNA said an Israeli airstrike hit a house in the town of Ghandouriyeh, killing at least one person and wounding two others.
The agency reported more strikes overnight and in the early morning on several areas of southern Lebanon, as well as an "extensive combing operation" carried out by Israeli troops in the area of Khiam town.

"We not only took out the facility, but also destroyed intelligence support sites and missile radar relays that were used to monitor ship movements," Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of US Central Command said in video message posted on X.
"Iran's ability to threaten freedom of navigation in and around the Strait of Hormuz is degraded as a result, and we will not stop pursuing these targets," he added.

People gather near tents used as shelter
Even in the midst of conflict and displacement, life finds small ways to carry on. In Beirut, amid rainy weather and Eid Al Fitr celebrations, children played near tents used as shelter by families uprooted following the latest escalation between Hezbollah and Israel, part of the wider US–Israeli war with Iran.
The sight of children at play is a heartwarming reminder that even in hardship, kids remain kids — instinctively seeking joy and comfort wherever they can.
Despite having lost their homes, people made do with what they had —gathering around fires, sharing moments of warmth and community, and finding solace in the simple fact that they were still alive.

Quiet Eid weekend in the Philippines
Eid Al Fitr in the Philippines has been noticeably quiet, with most families opting to stay home due to soaring fuel costs. Traditionally, long weekends encourage trips to popular tourism spots, but the current economic pressures, coupled with concerns over the ongoing Middle East conflict, are weighing on travel plans.
Tourism operators are increasingly worried that a prolonged regional crisis could further impact their businesses. Even in Baguio, the country’s famed “summer capital,” visitor numbers have dropped sharply during a period that normally draws crowds from the lowlands, according to Khaleej Times' Raymund Villanueva.
Algeria, Libya could be potential energy alternatives
Damage to Gulf energy infrastructure in the Middle East war has turned attention to Algeria and Libya as possible fallback oil and gas suppliers, but both have little room to ramp up output in the short term, experts say.
Since the conflict erupted last month with US-Israeli strikes on Iran, the Islamic republic has kept up retaliatory fire on Israel and Gulf nations, including attacks on oil and gas facilities.
The resulting concerns of a global energy supply shock have turned eyes towards Algeria, an oil producer and OPEC member that is also Africa's leading gas exporter.
Unlike Qatar, which exports liquefied natural gas (LNG) by tanker, Algeria relies primarily on gas pipelines: the TransMed to Italy and the MedGaz to Spain.
Combining land-based and underwater sections, they offer "a significant advantage" because "they are out of reach for Iran and Hezbollah's drones and missiles", Moez Ajmi, an energy analyst at the EY consulting firm, told AFP.
But they are already operating at full capacity.
Gas pipelines are "excellent alternatives in terms of security and insurance premiums, but there are structural limitations", said Geoff Porter, an analyst with North Africa Risk Consulting.
"There is some spare capacity in MedGaz (maybe 1 billion cubic metres per year), but there is no extra capacity in TransMed," he told AFP.
Iran Guards say targeted Israeli F-16 jet over country's centre
Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Saturday they had targeted an Israeli F-16 fighter jet over the country's centre.
Israel and the United States launched strikes on Iran on February 28, sparking a conflict that has since spread across the Middle East.
"An F-16 hostile enemy fighter jet belonging to the Zionist regime was struck at 3.45am in central Iran," the Guards said on their Sepah News website.
The Israeli military earlier said a surface-to-air missile had been launched at an Israeli aircraft during "an operational activity" in Iran, without specifying the type of jet.
It added that "no damage was caused to the aircraft".
It was not immediately clear if the Iranian and Israeli statements referred to the same incident.
Iranian media also released an image showing smoke in the sky, saying another aircraft had been targeted, without identifying the type or whether it belonged to Israel or the United States.

The proposal came in a phone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to a statement posted by the embassy on X.
The statement said Pezeshkian also told Modi that ending the war required an immediate halt to US and Israeli attacks and guarantees they would not be repeated.
The embassy said Pezeshkian urged BRICS, under India’s rotating presidency, to play an independent role in stopping what he described as “aggression against Iran.”

Iran warns of potential threats to routes beyond Hormuz
An unnamed Iranian military source, cited by Tasnim News Agency, said that insecurity in other strategic waterways — including the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea — could be among the options available to what it described as the “resistance front".
Iran threatens to disrupt Bab al-Mandeb Strait if US invades Kharg Island
Any US military action against Iran’s Kharg Island could trigger a sweeping escalation, including disruption of security at the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait as well as further attacks on regional energy facilities, the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News said citing a military source.
The source said that if Washington follows through on threats to invade the strategic oil hub, Iran would respond with measures “unprecedented” compared to those of the past three weeks.
The source warned that targeting other critical waterways including the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Red Sea, is among the options under consideration by Iran and its allied forces, suggesting the confrontation could expand well beyond the Strait of Hormuz.
The source said an attack on Kharg could temporarily disrupt Iran’s oil production and trigger retaliatory actions against energy infrastructure across the region, escalating risks for global markets. He said the US could face losses “unprecedented since WWII" if it tries to invade Kharg.

United Airlines prepares for oil to reach $175 a barrel
United Airlines is cutting more unprofitable flights over the next two quarters as it prepares for a prolonged period of high jet fuel prices due to the Iran war, even as strong travel demand has allowed US carriers to raise fares.
Chief Executive Scott Kirby said in a staff memo on Friday the airline is preparing for oil to rise as high as $175 a barrel and remain above $100 until the end of 2027. At those levels, United's annual fuel bill would rise by about $11 billion, more than twice the profit it earned in its "best year ever," he said.
The war in Iran has pushed airlines into a fresh fuel shock. Jet fuel prices have nearly doubled since late February, raising costs across the industry and disrupting global flying patterns through reroutings and airspace restrictions.
Still, US carriers have so far been able to push through fare increases, helped by resilient travel demand and tighter capacity.
"There's a good chance it won't be that bad," Kirby wrote of the airline's fuel assumptions. "But...there isn't much downside for us to preparing for that outcome."

That's a wrap!
As day 22 of the war came to a close, the conflict was marked by sharp escalatory warnings and significant military developments.
Iran issued one of its strongest threats yet, signalling that any US move against Kharg Island could trigger wider disruption — including risks to the Red Sea and the strategically vital Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a key global shipping route.
On the battlefield, capabilities also appeared to shift. The Israeli military reported that Iran had, for the first time since the start of Operation Roaring Lion, launched a long-range missile with an estimated reach of up to 4,000km.
At the same time, there were hints of a possible shift in Washington’s stance. Donald Trump said the US is considering “winding down” operations, even as strikes and military objectives remain ongoing.
