Inspiring Joy During Reading Time

National Reading Month is a timely reminder that helping children build strong literacy habits starts with making reading joyful, engaging, and accessible.

Ask any teacher or parent what helps a child become a confident reader, and the answer is rarely worksheets alone. It’s rhythm. It’s repetition. It’s joy.

Research consistently shows that early literacy development is strongest when children are actively engaged. According to the National Institute for Literacy, phonological awareness, vocabulary development, and repeated exposure to language patterns are foundational to reading success. When children can hear rhyme, recognize sounds, and connect letters to meaning in ways that feel playful, those skills stick.

That’s why National Reading Month matters. It offers classrooms and families a chance to pause and refocus on building habits that last beyond March. But for many educators and parents, preparation time is a real constraint. Teachers are balancing curriculum requirements and limited instructional minutes. Families are juggling busy schedules. The challenge is finding simple, consistent ways to make reading part of everyday routines.

Movement and music can help bridge that gap. When children clap out syllables, echo rhyming words, or act out stories, they are reinforcing comprehension and fluency through multiple pathways. Joy and physical engagement increase attention and retention. In other words, when reading feels dynamic, children lean in.

That belief inspired our partnership with Dr. Seuss, GoNoodle’s Official Literacy Partner, including the launch of the new Dr. Seuss channel in celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday and  National Reading Month. The channel now features educator-ready videos and printable educator guides with fun, easy-to-do activities designed to reinforce foundational reading skills.

The new channel pairs rhythmic, repeatable video experiences with quick, easy classroom extensions. For example, children can build letter recognition and phonics skills through musical alphabet activities, then deepen comprehension with matching printables.

The goal is not to replace books, but rather to reinforce them. By combining storytelling with movement and repeatable language patterns, the experience helps students practice rhymes, vocabulary, and story elements in ways that feel playful rather than pressured. Classrooms participating during March can also unlock a limited-time “Seuss-sational Reader” badge to celebrate consistent engagement.

National Reading Month is ultimately about helping children see reading as something joyful and empowering. When educators and families have accessible tools that fit naturally into existing routines, building those habits becomes easier.

The future of literacy isn’t just about teaching children to decode words. It’s about helping them fall in love with stories and giving them the confidence to keep turning the page.
