Sheikh Mohamed and Swiss leader advance AI and economic ties

President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan held substantive talks with His Excellency Guy Parmelin, President of the Swiss Confederation, in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, emphasising cooperation on artificial intelligence, economic partnership and water security while reinforcing diplomatic commitment to global peace and stability. The discussions at Qasr Al Shati brought forward agreements aimed at deepening bilateral relations between the two nations and aligning strategic priorities in technology and sustainable development.

Sheikh Mohamed underscored that embracing artificial intelligence is central to future economic growth, innovation and competitiveness. Both leaders highlighted the role of advanced technologies in addressing global challenges and fostering inclusive prosperity, reflecting their shared interest in AI as a cornerstone of multilateral cooperation. They also reviewed plans linked to the Global AI Summit, scheduled for Geneva in 2027 and the UAE in 2028, positioning these gatherings as platforms for international dialogue on responsible AI use.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between the UAE Ministry of Foreign Trade and Switzerland’s Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research to establish a joint economic committee designed to enhance trade policy coordination and identify investment opportunities. This accord aims to streamline economic ties, build on existing investment flows and encourage business exchanges between the nations. A letter of intent was also penned to boost cooperation on water-related issues, particularly focusing on the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6, which targets universal access to safe water and sanitation.

Officials from both sides described the economic agenda as broad and forward-looking, targeting sectors where technology and innovation can drive mutual benefit. Sheikh Mohamed congratulated Parmelin on his election as President of the Swiss Confederation for 2026, signalling a personal commitment to deepening diplomatic and economic engagement between Abu Dhabi and Bern. Senior ministers and members of both delegations attended the session, reflecting the high-level nature of the discussions.

Artificial intelligence emerged as a key topic, aligning with the UAE’s wider strategic agenda to position itself as a global hub for AI development. The leadership has been active in fostering AI innovation; previous initiatives have included a national AI strategy focused on integrating the technology across sectors such as healthcare, education and government services, as well as measures to strengthen infrastructure and talent development in the field. Emirati ministers, technology chiefs and stakeholders have stressed the importance of collaboration with global partners to scale AI research and application responsibly.

Both leaders also reaffirmed their shared belief in the necessity of pursuing peace and stability through diplomatic engagement. The UAE and Switzerland have historically advocated for international dialogue as a means of addressing geopolitical tensions, and this theme resonated in the discussions as they reviewed global and regional developments. Water cooperation was highlighted as another pillar of the expanding partnership.
