A bus plunged off a highway near Antalya in southern Turkey, killing eight people and injuring 26 others, the provincial governor reported on Sunday.

“Eight of our citizens have lost their lives, and 26 have been injured,” Hulusi Sahin said.

The bus, carrying 34 passengers to the coastal tourist city, veered off the road.

"It's an intersection where you shouldn't drive fast, yet it appears the bus entered it at high speed," he said, adding that rain had made the road slippery.

Several of the injured are in critical condition, though it has not been confirmed if any foreign nationals were among them, the governor said.

Antalya’s coastal region is a well-known resort area that attracts numerous international visitors each year.
