UPI Payments: No more PINs, UPI payments will be made through biometrics; Amazon Pay launches new feature

Amazon Pay has launched biometrics for UPI payments. Payments can now be made using fingerprint or face recognition. The hassle of entering a four-digit PIN has been eliminated. This feature is available for transactions up to ₹5,000.

Another major step has been taken regarding digital payments in the country. Amid the growing use of UPI, Amazon Pay has now launched a biometric authentication-based UPI payment feature for Indian users. With this new feature, users will no longer need to enter a four-digit UPI PIN for every transaction. Now payments can be made easily using just fingerprint or face recognition. The company says that this step will not only make payments faster but will also significantly reduce problems related to UPI like fraud and PIN theft.

How will Amazon Pay work now?

Amazon Pay’s new feature will allow users to authenticate UPI payments using their smartphone’s biometric system. This means there’s no longer the need to enter a PIN when sending money, paying by scanning a QR code at a store, checking bank balances, or shopping on the Amazon app. Biometric verification will act as a digital key, making transactions more secure. This feature also facilitates one-handed use, making everyday small payments faster than before.

Limit up to ₹5,000

Amazon Pay has clarified that biometric authentication will currently be available only for UPI transactions up to ₹5,000. For payments above this limit, users will still be required to enter their UPI PIN . The company believes this limit will strike a balance between convenience and security. In fact, eliminating the hassle of entering a PIN for small transactions will significantly ease users’ safety, while maintaining additional security for larger payments.

Biometric authentication has been introduced in the UPI ecosystem even before Amazon Pay. New solutions introduced by Navi UPI, Samsung Wallet, and NPCI indicate that India’s digital payment system is rapidly becoming more secure and advanced. This move by Amazon Pay is considered a significant initiative towards making UPI payments more reliable and user-friendly in the future.
