Etihad Rail’s passenger service is taking shape as the United Arab Emirates’ newest intercity transport option, promising fast, comfortable and reliable rail travel across the country when it begins operations in 2026. Designed as a modern alternative to long-distance driving, the network will link 11 cities and regions with trains capable of carrying around 400 passengers at speeds up to 200 km/h, targeting both daily commuters and leisure travellers alike.

The ambitious project reflects a shift from freight-only operations to a full national passenger railway system, connecting major hubs such as Mohammed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi, Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, University City in Sharjah and Al Hilal in Fujairah. Strategic station placement seeks to enhance mobility while fostering seamless integration with other transport modes, including local buses and ride-hail services at major stops.

Etihad Rail’s leadership highlights the service’s role in reshaping travel habits. “Our preparations to launch passenger services reflect the vision of our wise leadership to build an integrated transport ecosystem that supports the UAE’s economic and social fabric,” said Azza AlSuwaidi, Deputy Chief Executive of Etihad Rail Mobility, describing a focus on comfort, reliability and accessibility.

Guaranteed seating and fixed timetables are core to the offering, aimed at giving passengers confidence to plan journeys around the network’s schedule. The operator emphasises predictability for commuters, positioning rail travel as a dependable alternative to congested roads and unpredictable traffic patterns.

Onboard amenities underscore the service’s appeal to a broad range of travellers. Each carriage will offer full Wi-Fi coverage, individual power outlets, ergonomic seating and generous luggage space, enabling passengers to work, relax or connect with family during the journey. Dedicated family seating areas and a calm onboard environment align with design priorities that extend beyond mere functionality to reflect lifestyle needs.

Business travellers stand to benefit from the connectivity and convenience offered on long-distance routes. Spacious interiors and digital connectivity are designed to facilitate productivity en route between major economic centres across the Emirates. For families, the absence of road-related stress, combined with scenic views of deserts, coastal landscapes and cultural landmarks, positions rail travel as a more enjoyable way to explore and connect with loved ones.

The passenger network builds on the operational success of Etihad Rail’s freight services, which have transported goods across the UAE since 2023. As the passenger rollout advances, ten out of thirteen modern trainsets have already arrived and been tested, certified to international safety standards, according to company updates.

Officials project that the network will contribute to broader social and environmental objectives, including reducing road congestion and cutting emissions by shifting a significant volume of intercity travel to rail. This aligns with national sustainability goals and enhances the appeal of public transport as a cleaner, more efficient option.

Economic analysts note that the enhanced inter-emirate connectivity may stimulate tourism, support regional commerce and unlock growth opportunities for communities along the route. With integration into the wider transport ecosystem, the passenger trains are expected to serve both domestic travellers and visitors, strengthening ties between urban centres and outlying regions.
