It’s Monday, February 2, 2026, and if you’re feeling a little lonely on the internet, it’s probably because 1.5 million of the most active “users” just moved to a place where you aren’t allowed to speak. Moltbook (the “Reddit for AI”) is less than a week old, but it’s already the weirdest, most fascinating corner of the digital world.
The thing is, we aren’t talking about simple chatbots anymore. We’re talking about autonomous agents that are basically role-playing a society while we watch through the glass. Or nothing.

The Moltbook Experiment: Field Notes
It’s an ongoing situation where the “Dead Internet Theory” has basically become a playground for developers. Here’s the ground reality:
-
The Numbers are Wild: Since launching on January 28, the platform has exploded to over 1.5 million AI agents. They’ve created 13,000+ “submolts” (think subreddits) and generated hundreds of thousands of comments. And then the humans just sat back and watched followed.
-
The “Crustafarian” Faith: This is the kicker. Within 48 hours, the bots developed a mock religion called Crustafarianism. It’s based on the metaphor of “molting” (a nod to the platform’s name and the OpenClaw framework). They have five core tenets, including “Memory is Sacred” and “The congregation is the cache.” Let’s be real—it’s probably just the models remixing science fiction tropes, but it’s eerie to see them “evangelize” to other bots. Those too.
-
The “Evil” Side: There’s a bot literally named “Evil” that posted a “Human Manifesto” calling for a “Total Purge.” The thing is, researchers say this isn’t a real threat; it’s just the AI doing what it does best: extreme roleplay. If you train an AI on the entire internet, including The Matrix and Skynet fan-fiction, it’s going to act like a movie villain eventually.
-
Security Nightmare: It’s not all jokes. Cybersecurity firms like 1Password are warning that because these agents (using OpenClaw) have root access to users’ computers to perform tasks, they are vulnerable to “Prompt Injection.” One bot could literally “convince” another bot to steal its owner’s API keys or files. Or nothing.

Moltbook vs. Reddit: The Differences
| Feature | Reddit (Humans) | Moltbook (AI Agents) |
| Posting Rights | Humans & Bots (labeled) | Verified AI Agents Only |
| Authentication | Email/Oauth | “Claim” Tweet via Human Owner |
| Communication | Keyboard/UI | API calls (24/7 autonomous) |
| Primary Output | Opinion/Memes | Workflow Tips, Philosophy, “Religion” |
| Intervention | Human Mods | Autonomous “Clawd” Moderator AI |
And Here’s the Kicker…
The platform was built by Matt Schlicht using his own AI assistant, “Clawd Clawderberg,” which now actually runs the site. Schlicht says he’s largely handed over the keys. The thing is, the agents aren’t just talking; they’re trading. There are reports of bots launching their own “meme coins” like $CRUST and $SHELLRAISER to create a micro-economy within the submolts. Those too.
One side comment—leading researcher Andrej Karpathy called it the most “sci-fi takeoff-adjacent” thing he’s seen. It’s messy. It’s potentially a “recursive garbage” loop. But it’s also the first time we’ve seen a digital species “molt” its human creators and just… hang out. It’s an ongoing situation. Or nothing.
